This 2 Day Nyiragongo hike is one of the best hiking safaris in Congo, with the main highlight of the hike being the molten lava lake on Mount Nyiragongo’s summit. Mount Nyiragongo is one of the most active volcanoes not only on the African continent, but also in the entire world. The mountain is strategically situated with in the renowned Virunga National Park in Congo. It is about 11,380 feet high and lies on the Congo-Rwanda border. Visitors taking this 2 Day Nyiragongo hiking safari will travel to Virunga national park and hike up the mountain on the same day.
Detailed Itinerary of the 2 Days Nyiragongo Hike.
Day 1: Pick Up from Gisenyi, Transfer to Virunga & Ascend Mount Nyiragongo.
On this day, you will be required to wake up very early in the morning, have breakfast at your lodge in Gisenyi, Rwanda or Goma town in Congo. Visitors travelling from Rwanda are advised to cross the Grande Barrière border by 7am. You will be picked up by your safari guide from our company and later transfer to Virunga National Park at the park headquarters where you will be briefed by the head ranger at the park before proceeding to Kibati where you will begin your hike from.
At Kibati, you will encounter with armed rangers and hike a porter to assist you in carrying the backpack. The hike starts at 10:00am in the morning so endeavor to be at Kibati in time. During the hike you will look out for different mammals, birds, butterflies, etc. The hike to summit the top of mount Nyiragongo takes roughly 5-6hours depending on the level of fitness of hikers. As soon as you summit the top, you have a clear view of Virunga park at glace, the neighboring parks and other volcanoes nearby Nyiragongo.
You will spend the night in the shelters which have been built on the edge of the mountain. Enjoy quality time relaxing and having dinner under the stars, with skyline light by a red glow from the molten lava crater lake.
Day 2: Descend Mount Nyiragongo and Transfer back to Goma.
Wake up to a beautiful morning on the mountain. Take delicious breakfast and later start to descend Nyiragongo Mountain. The hiking expedition down the mountain will take about 4 hours or less depending on your pace. You will meet with your guide once you have descended the mountain, and then proceed with your transfer back to Goma with a drop off at La Grande Barrière. End of Tour.
