Rwanda Gorilla trekking in 2021 : Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is the biggest tourist attraction in the country. Rwanda is one of the homes of the last remaining mountain gorillas. The mountain gorillas can be visited in Rwanda in the Volcanoes national park, in Uganda in two national parks that is Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park and in the Democratic republic of Congo in the Virunga national park.

Virunga national park has 12 habituated gorilla groups as of 2019 and a maximum number of 8 people are allowed to trek a family per day. This means there are 96 available permits per day for one to book for this once in a lifetime experience. A mountain gorilla trekking permit goes for 1,500 USD per permit per person and you will be expected to be 16 years and above to qualify for a permit. A percentage of the fee charged on the mountain gorilla permit goes back to the community and in the conservation efforts of the mountain gorillas.

Tourism in Rwanda was put on a hold after the COVID-19 global world pandemic hit the world and demanded less social activities and movements which led to the closing of all the national parks, tour points and even the Kigali International airport. However, after about 6 months, Rwanda was ready to reopen for tourists both domestic and the international guests. On the 1st of August 2020, the Kigali International airport was open along with the national parks of the country.

There are however some mandatory guidelines one would have to follow on arrival into the country like presenting a mandatory COVID-19 PCR negative test result taken in the last 72 hours. Guests flying into Rwanda should be ready to take another test and spend 24 hours or less in a designated quarantine hotel as you wait for the results.

Once you complete your quarantine and you have received your test results, you will head out to the hotel you will be spending the night. It is advisable to spend the night before your gorilla trek in Musanze or Kinigi, the towns just outside the park so as to make it in time for the early morning brief before the activity. There are a few accommodations you may look out for depending on your budget like Amakoro Songa lodge, Singita Kwitonda lodge for the luxury guests who have a few thousand US dollars to spend for a luxury night in the park.

The mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes national park starts with an early morning brief at 7 am by the park rangers on what to expect while in the forest and the code of conduct expected. The Volcanoes national park activities are regulated by the Rwanda Development Board and this board has recruited over 90 skilled ranger guides to guide and protect guests of the park at all times.

The mountain gorillas are named after their preferred habitat so expect to do some mountain hiking as you get closer to the mountain gorilla and this hike can take from about 1 hour to 3 hours in Volcanoes national park. The forest of Volcanoes national park is not as thick and you will have clear views of the mountain gorilla family when you meet them. You will stay at a distance of 7 meters to enjoy the gorillas undisturbed and going about their day.

Visiting the mountain gorillas Post-COVID, you will be expected to have a face mask on at all times when in the park as the mountain gorillas can contract disease from man. Your body temperatures while be checked at a number of stops and on entry to the park before you are allowed to proceed.
