With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite hiking trails across Rwanda that are sure to leave a lasting impression on you.
Mt Sabyinyo:
Situated in the northwestern province of Rwanda, Mt Sabyinyo is home to over 60 species of mammals, including chimpanzees and mountain gorillas. You can reach the summit by hiking up a beautiful gorge or walking over the bamboo bridge that leads to the top. Along the way you’ll encounter various monkeys and birds and maybe even a few cheeky baboons. Keep in mind that the mountain is usually very windy and cold at the top, so be sure to pack a jacket and a water bottle if you’re planning a hike to this top!
Umuganda Hike:
Located in the southern province of the country, this hike passes through some beautiful farmland and takes you through the unique community of Kimironko, which features dozens of grass huts known as Intore. You can also stop by a local school before arriving at your destination.
Murambi Genocide Memorial:
Located at the site of the former Murambi genocide memorial center in Kigali, this trail offers incredible views of Kigali’s city center and the sprawling hills of the nearby Akagera National Park. You’ll also pass by a beautiful lake and a number of historic sites from the Rwandan genocide. This is truly an experience you won’t forget!
